Mr. Mikko Paakkanen is the Young Designer of the Year 2006. He works in Studio Helsinki, and has made some very nice furniture designs in the past.
Mikko Paakkanen was interviewed in the Finnish breakfast tv today. He's very sensible and my estimate is that we will hear from him in the future.

Nietos Chair for Avarte
The winner of Uddeholm Steel Inno Award was announced today. The winner is Esa Juntura, an industrial designer from Tornio in northern Finland. The award was a stipendium worth 8000 Euros.
Esa Juntura works from his own company, Studio Muotopuoli, and does industrial design for various companies.
His latest work is "B&A Design" product family for Betamet, including benches, ashtrays, dustbins and many others.
Tulikivi is a Finnish producer of fireplaces, ovens and other soapstone items. They also provide stone material for architectural and interior design.
Besides of the nice design, the stone they use originates from Finland and therefore has a different consistency from the stone of other parts of the world.
Tulikivi has invested a lot in the design and product development during the last years and lifted these standard products into valued design items.
Skanno, one of the main design furniture shops in Helsinki is moving. They are closing down their downtown store and will open a new very large shop in Salmisaari, close to Ruoholahti metro station.
The new store is in an old brewery and supposed to be nice and big. If I'll get invited in the opening party, I'll let you know first hand...
While waiting for the opening of the new shop, there is a great chance in their current shop. They are selling everything with great discounts - I mean everything! That includes also their shop furniture designed for their own purposes.
For example a great idea for a room divider. Buy their chair shelf - one designed for exhibiting their collection of chairs - and make it a two storey reading spot.

The collection is called Dream (Naisen Ääni in Finnish) and it celebrates 100th jubileum of women getting a right to vote in Finland. It consists of earrings, pendants and brooches for women and cufflinks and tiepins for men.
The new Kamppi shopping mall opened its doors last Thursday. It has over 150 shops and restaurants in six floors.
The reason I'm writing about a shopping mall here is that the mall has actually quite a good selection of design-related shops. So, if the weather is bad or you have limited time to spend, check these out:
